Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a physical therapy program used to correct any atypical patterns of the oral and facial muscles. It involves strengthening of the tongue and orofacial muscles by retraining the muscle to function as they should.
All myofunctional therapy programs begin with an initial, comprehensive evaluation. An evaluation allows me to complete a detailed review of your dental/health history, perform a structural and functional exam of the oral and facial muscles, and thoroughly discuss any symptoms so we may address the root cause of the problem. If a customized therapy program is indicated, your program may include a referral to other professionals whose services are needed to achieve, complement or support your therapy goals.
This program is designed for children, ages 4-10, that will consist of 12 sessions. The Mini-Myo Program is never the same for two children because each child will participate differently. Parents are an integral part of this therapy as they are the ones who are actively working with the child. This program works on habit elimination, breathing, correct posture of the tongue, and lip seal. Pre and post frenectomy is included if required.
This program is for clients who are strictly concerned about exercises related to a tongue tie release. These clients will need full myofunctional therapy as soon as possible, but want to begin with focus on the tongue tie revision. This program includes 6 sessions; 3 before surgical procedure and 3 after.
This 12-14 session program is for ages 6 and up and focuses on the four goals of myofunctional therapy: nasal breathing, correct tongue posture, lip seal, and correct tongue placement for swallowing. Pre and post frenectomy care is included if required.
This advanced 16-18 session program is typically recommended for clients with more complex, chronic symptoms such as sleep concerns, jaw pain, postural issues, and chewing and swallowing difficulties. Pre and post frenectomy is included if required.
This 4 session program is for clients ages 4 and up who have an oral habit, such as thumb/finger sucking, pacifier use, and nail biting. Oral habits need to be eliminated prior to starting a myofunctional therapy program. Continued therapy after habit elimination is recommended to focus on the four goals of myofunctional therapy.
